2007.07.31 07:32:10 JoanieP joined the room.

2007.07.31 07:32:16 RicardoT: I chose this lesson for teaching because I saw that it would be an effective tool for teaching a high school based class, maybe grades 9-12. when I was introduced to this method of teaching when I was in high school I thought it was the coolest…it also worked really well at reaching the kids and making them see things in movies in a different light.

2007.07.31 07:32:45 DanikaB . o O ( ESL Partyland.... cool )

2007.07.31 07:32:47 MariaBa left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 07:32:49 MariaBa joined the room.

2007.07.31 07:32:56 RicardoT: Now if could please visit the first site…the esl party land one…

2007.07.31 07:33:17 RicardoT: I like this site because it has multiple activities for pre and post video activities, if you scroll down through it you can see what I’m talking about…

2007.07.31 07:33:51 DanikaB was thinking about showing do the right thing

2007.07.31 07:34:02 RicardoT: hehe

2007.07.31 07:34:09 RicardoT: Of course as a teacher you can choose the movie(s) that you see as effective for teaching.

2007.07.31 07:34:12 LoriOl: never seen it

2007.07.31 07:34:36 RicardoT: But you can’t show students just any movie, nowadays in order to show it to the class you have to get it approved by the principle or whoever is in charge. This is so you don’t get in trouble with the man…

2007.07.31 07:34:51 AidaM: interesting site

2007.07.31 07:34:59 DanikaB smiles

2007.07.31 07:35:09 JoseJC: pfft

2007.07.31 07:35:15 JoseJC: I remember we saw jurassic park once

2007.07.31 07:35:22 JoseJC: what it had to do with school, I had no idea

2007.07.31 07:35:35 LoriOl: biology!!

2007.07.31 07:35:37 MariaBa: what grade level would be appropriate

2007.07.31 07:35:43 RicardoT: its isnt the most exciting site but i think it is neat

2007.07.31 07:35:49 JoseJC: well true, too bad we saw it in English class though ;_;

2007.07.31 07:35:54 RicardoT: high school

2007.07.31 07:35:59 RicardoT: grades 9-12

2007.07.31 07:36:02 DanikaB: that's where Ricardo's resource comes in handy, right? it provides activities to help the students see the connection between watching a film and learning from it

2007.07.31 07:36:13 JoseJC: dora the explorer!

2007.07.31 07:36:14 AidaM: perhaps you can write about the move

2007.07.31 07:36:15 NikkiC: yeah...I think that if in my Spanish classes in high school where I've had to watch a movie, if the teacher gave us words and phrases to look out for I would have learned much better

2007.07.31 07:36:20 SylviaMe: Ricardo is this link on tapped or in our reg e-mail

2007.07.31 07:36:30 JoseJC: he pasted it earlier

2007.07.31 07:36:36 JoseJC: http://www.eslpartyland.com/teachers/nov/film.htm

2007.07.31 07:36:40 RicardoT: At the very bottom of the page you can do fun activities to get the kids to become involved with writing and cooperation. For example there is a scavenger hunt that you can have the kids do…I thought that that was fun.

2007.07.31 07:36:41 RicardoT: its in tapped in

2007.07.31 07:36:42 MariaBa: yes students need to visualize things

2007.07.31 07:36:53 SylviaMe: ok

2007.07.31 07:36:54 DanikaB: sylvia, it is under the discussion links in teaching resources (but you should have gotten an email with it too)

2007.07.31 07:36:56 JessicaG: yes, good idea Aida, I think that students would love to do this type of activity in the classroom

2007.07.31 07:37:33 JessicaG: Some people are visual learners therefore, a movie activity would be great for them

2007.07.31 07:37:39 RicardoT: At the very bottom of the page you can do fun activities to get the kids to become involved with writing and cooperation. For example there is a scavenger hunt that you can have the kids do…I thought that that was fun.

2007.07.31 07:37:39 RicardoT: oops sorry about the last comment i got ahead of myself

2007.07.31 07:37:49 DanikaB: i like using film and television in class to get students to write. i have used the film Milagro Beanfield War here with a lot of success

2007.07.31 07:37:57 AidaM: there are so many things that can be taught when watching a movie

2007.07.31 07:38:27 LoriOl: its one thing to read a book, and another to see it come to life

2007.07.31 07:38:35 RicardoT: http://www.webenglishteacher.com/media.html

2007.07.31 07:38:44 RicardoT: this is my second site

2007.07.31 07:38:47 ElizabetCh: I agree with Jessica

2007.07.31 07:38:52 JosephAW joined the room.

2007.07.31 07:38:52 JoseJC: that's true, for 4318 both Newmans use movies in their teaching

2007.07.31 07:39:00 JoseJC: so this is useful even beyond high school

2007.07.31 07:39:10 JessicaG: As for my experience I think I can comprehend a story better when it is on film and then of course I would read the book

2007.07.31 07:39:11 MariaBa: there always something that can interest the student

2007.07.31 07:39:18 RicardoT: Now on to the next site…

2007.07.31 07:39:18 RicardoT: The second site is about teaching kids media literacy information literacy. You can also do fun lessons where you learn more about The Language of Film, Adaptation, Literary Elements, Wrap Up Resources, and a whole lot more!

2007.07.31 07:39:47 LoriOl: in my sociology class last semster, we watched a bunch of videos from national geographic...that was cool

2007.07.31 07:40:04 RicardoT: I like this site, it gives you more back bone for the first presentation…

2007.07.31 07:40:10 DanikaB thinks watching films and analyzing them are an important part of critical literacy ... more and more people get their social messages from this type of media and need to be able to interpret, evaluate, and critique what they are seeing

2007.07.31 07:48:57 RicardoT: The third site is similar to the first but this one has more movies to choose from, if you look through it, it has tons of other movies, domestic and international that you get film summaries of that way it gives the teacher easier and faster knowledge of what they are potential showing the students.

2007.07.31 07:49:12 DanikaB nods wow, lots of links

2007.07.31 07:49:19 RicardoT: indeed

2007.07.31 07:49:47 RicardoT: There is also exercises you can do with the students, these are a little more detailed discussion questions, that I see if you have more time to do work on a film it would be perfect.

2007.07.31 07:50:29 LoriOl: awesome they use The Departed as a teaching tool

2007.07.31 07:50:34 JoseJC: whoa, where

2007.07.31 07:51:37 DanikaB: it's true, Jose... that's a good point to remember as a teacher... don't pick your beloved favorites to teach because the students rarely love it as much as you do and sometimes it ruins it for you

2007.07.31 07:51:40 DanikaB smiles

2007.07.31 07:51:42 JessicaG: Okay, now who is next, if nobody, I would like to present next.

2007.07.31 08:01:36 ChristineQ: who says?

2007.07.31 08:01:38 JessicaG: Not really, actually it is Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico

2007.07.31 08:01:39 KevinMG: nice thnking jose

2007.07.31 08:01:41 AidaM: la batalla de cinco de mayo is correct

2007.07.31 08:02:21 JessicaG: It is not the Independence day, but I think it should be.

2007.07.31 08:02:51 DanikaB: i think this is an interesting activity question on the site: 3. Are there celebrations for both positive and negative dates in history? Name three "dark" dates.

2007.07.31 08:03:06 DanikaB: it seems to me that "dark days" might be identified differently by different cultures...

2007.07.31 08:03:09 JoseJC: BASTILLE DAY

2007.07.31 08:03:10 AidaM: I like the cinco de mayo puzzle.

2007.07.31 08:03:12 JoseJC: wait

2007.07.31 08:03:16 MariaBa: there very good to teach about our culture

2007.07.31 08:03:16 LoriOl: dia de los muertos???

2007.07.31 08:03:20 DanikaB . o O ( thanksgiving might be a dark day to native americans )

2007.07.31 08:03:29 JessicaG: Many people think that the Cinco de Mayo is a Mexican Independence day, but it is not, although it should be.  Mexico declared its independence from mother Spain on midnight, the 15th of September 1810, it took 11 years before the first Spanish soldiers were told and forced to leave Mexico. So, Why Okay here is a brief definition of what cinco de Mayo means, Cinco de Mayo? Because 4,000 Mexican soldiers smashed the French and traitor Mexican army of 8,000 at Puebla, Mexico, 100 miles east of Mexico City on the morning of May 5, 1862.

2007.07.31 08:03:42 JoseJC: the 5th of november!

2007.07.31 08:04:26 DanikaB looks for "smashed" on the vocabular list

2007.07.31 08:04:29 DanikaB smiles

2007.07.31 08:04:38 RicardoT: are you wikipedi'n that jose?

2007.07.31 08:05:11 RicardoT: i love that name

2007.07.31 08:05:18 JoseJC: Guy?

2007.07.31 08:05:29 JoseJC: lmbo

2007.07.31 08:05:43 JessicaG: Yes, I find this site very interesting because many students do not have any idea of what it means, and another thing about this website is that it has several activites that the teacher could implement in the classroom for the students over this Mexican Holiday.

2007.07.31 08:05:48 DanikaB is looking at the "rootonym" activity on the site

2007.07.31 08:05:55 DanikaB nods at jessica

2007.07.31 08:06:11 LoriOl: teachers don't accept sources from wikipedia....right?

2007.07.31 08:06:41 JacquelyPH: I dont think so

2007.07.31 08:06:44 JessicaG: CAn anybody figure out the words in the rootonym puzzle provided in the site?

2007.07.31 08:07:09 DanikaB: wikipedia is a great resource for initial or casual research, but it isn't a legitimate academic source because it is not peer reviewed and checked rigorously enough for accuracy.

2007.07.31 08:07:29 LoriOl: yeah which one

2007.07.31 08:07:35 JessicaG: Lori, MAny of them dont for the reason that they are not scholar indivuals that upload the information, it can be anybody..

2007.07.31 08:07:45 DanikaB: anyone can edit wikipedia entries, therefore the infromation given there should be verified with outside sources that undergo more rigorous peer review and editin

2007.07.31 08:07:46 JoseJC: the first one is CANTINA!

2007.07.31 08:07:54 SylviaMe: #1cantina

2007.07.31 08:08:48 JoanieP left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:09:21 JessicaG: People don't even have to look at the answers because this words are very common for "cinco de Mayo"

2007.07.31 08:10:40 AnaR: many people celebrate

2007.07.31 08:10:54 DanikaB: jessica, you would use this for an English class or a spanish class?

2007.07.31 08:10:57 DanikaB: or both?

2007.07.31 08:11:11 JessicaG: Well I'm not saying that anybody did, it was just a comment

2007.07.31 08:12:18 DanikaB: it seems to me that puzzles and activities seem to be highly effective ways to get young students to practice writing and to learn history or other subjects that sometimes seem boring in textbooks

2007.07.31 08:12:31 RicardoT: i like it

2007.07.31 08:12:40 JessicaG: Well, I think i would use this site for both languages.  In an English class, so the students can have an appreciation of other cultures and in the spanish class because it has to do with the Mwexican culture and also because many students don't know wthat Cinco De Mayo means.

2007.07.31 08:13:01 DanikaB nods.  that makes complete sense to me, Jessica

2007.07.31 08:13:31 DanikaB: Is there anything else you would like to point out to us, Jessica, or does anyone have any questions

2007.07.31 08:13:38 SandraFl: Perhaps a  lesson in history as well...I like it Jessica

2007.07.31 08:13:40 DanikaB is watching the time

2007.07.31 08:13:46 MariaBa: yes so they can learn where we come from

2007.07.31 08:13:48 AnaR: jessica i agree with you in that studetns would benefit from this because many schools celebrate cinco de mayo

2007.07.31 08:14:02 RicardoT: yes

2007.07.31 08:14:20 RicardoT: they made us taco lunches back in the day

2007.07.31 08:14:22 AnaR: especially here in the valley

2007.07.31 08:14:29 ElizabetCh: At our school we start with Pre-K

2007.07.31 08:14:43 AidaM: I like it, I already saved it on my favorites

2007.07.31 08:14:49 MarcosC left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:14:49 JessicaG: In regards to the puzzle activities, and the alphabetic activity I think that students will enjoy this activity, you all see the way we're discussing it here in tapped in (students making jokes out of it) it seems like students enjoy this topic.

2007.07.31 08:14:54 MariaBa: cinco de mayo is not very well inforced in some school I wonder why?

2007.07.31 08:14:55 DanikaB smiles at Aida

2007.07.31 08:15:11 DanikaB nods at Jessica... i agree

2007.07.31 08:15:33 AnaR: i guess it depends in the diversity

2007.07.31 08:16:02 DanikaB: I think maybe there is probably a division of sorts about whether it is a Mexican holiday and if American schools are supposed to celebrate it.

2007.07.31 08:16:04 JessicaG: Well actually here in the RGV, I think that many of the Districts do, they have special events  for "cinco de Mayo"

2007.07.31 08:16:05 DanikaB shrugs

2007.07.31 08:16:21 MarcosC joined the room.

2007.07.31 08:16:21 RicardoT: my school did

2007.07.31 08:16:24 DanikaB nods

2007.07.31 08:16:40 LoriOl: mine didn't

2007.07.31 08:16:40 RicardoT: we had a whole day dedicated to it

2007.07.31 08:16:48 AnaR: i feel that it also has alot to do with the principle

2007.07.31 08:16:52 DanikaB: it sure makes sense to me to honor it this close to the border, especially. i think it is a significant holiday for many here

2007.07.31 08:16:55 JessicaG: Okay, now lets talk about the Cinco De Mayo celebration.  El grito, the food, the mariachi, and all the dancing.

2007.07.31 08:16:59 RicardoT: it was an awesome day to get out of class

2007.07.31 08:17:04 LoriOl: what school did you go to ricardo

2007.07.31 08:17:07 MariaBa: I think so too

2007.07.31 08:17:17 DanikaB: jessica, i don't mean to cut you short, but we need to leave time for jasmine and nikki to present as well.

2007.07.31 08:17:18 RicardoT: Edinburg high

2007.07.31 08:17:23 JessicaG: Cinco de Mayo is an important traditional holiday to for all Mexican people; by observing Cinco de Mayo we celebrate Mexico’s freedom and liberty.  It is basically celebrated by all the Chicanos in the entire nation; you don’t necessarily have to be in Mexico to celebrate this holiday.  Here in the U.S. it has become part of a yearly tradition especially in the states where there are a lot of Chicanos.  For example here in the South Texas Region we celebrate Cinco de Mayo with a variety of Mexican traditional foods, Mexican dances like flokórico and others, music such as Mariachi, Mexican theme parties, and etc.

2007.07.31 08:17:48 SylviaMe: good job

2007.07.31 08:18:02 AnaR: LOVED IT :)

2007.07.31 08:18:02 LoriOl two thumbs up

2007.07.31 08:18:07 JessicaG: Okay to wrap it up, I will conclude my presentation

2007.07.31 08:18:11 RicardoT: Gold stars!

2007.07.31 08:18:12 JessicaG: I found this site very helpful since it gives a very clear understanding of what Cinco de Mayo means.  It also has many ideas, lesson plans, and activities that can help Spanish teachers incorporate this topic in the classroom.  In addition, for those of you that didn’t have an idea what Cinco de Mayo stands for, I hope that you all were able to learn something new; as well as for those of you that already had a clear understanding of this cultural celebration, I thank you for your time.. Over all thanks to all of you that were able to join today’s online presentations.  Goodbye.......

2007.07.31 08:18:14 DanikaB smiles

2007.07.31 08:18:16 MariaBa: Great Job

2007.07.31 08:18:30 DanikaB: That's great, Jessica.

2007.07.31 08:18:44 AidaM: excellent

2007.07.31 08:18:58 DanikaB: I especially appreciate that you provided us with your reflections on the resource and guided us through an activity to engage in the resource.

2007.07.31 08:18:58 JessicaG: I hope you all enjoyed todays presentation

2007.07.31 08:19:03 RicardoT: i did

2007.07.31 08:19:04 DanikaB smiles

2007.07.31 08:19:10 DanikaB claps

2007.07.31 08:19:32 DanikaB: okay, let's turn our attention to Jasmine's resource...

2007.07.31 08:19:39 JasmineR: ok

2007.07.31 08:19:39 LoriOl: we got to talk about drinking....and doc brown brought it up...it was awesome

2007.07.31 08:19:41 DanikaB: Jasmine are you ready to guide us?

2007.07.31 08:19:44 JasmineR: yes

2007.07.31 08:19:57 JasmineR: Buenos dias apresiada audiencia!

2007.07.31 08:19:59 DanikaB . o O ( ruhroh... let's just edit that out of the transcripts )

2007.07.31 08:20:00 LoriOl still thinking of margaritas

2007.07.31 08:20:03 JoanieP joined the room.

2007.07.31 08:20:25 GregMar cheers and takes a drink of his juice

2007.07.31 08:20:27 DanikaB reads carefully

2007.07.31 08:20:39 LoriOl: ok...i dont know spanish that well...what did that say?

2007.07.31 08:20:40 JasmineR: So, who understood what I just said?

2007.07.31 08:20:48 SylviaMe: i did

2007.07.31 08:20:51 JoseJC: <-

2007.07.31 08:20:54 DanikaB: only a teeny bit.

2007.07.31 08:21:02 JasmineR: Well… the reason as to why I was typing in Spanish was to grab your attention.

2007.07.31 08:21:12 DanikaB thinks you got hers

2007.07.31 08:21:14 BrianG: u got my attention

2007.07.31 08:21:14 JasmineR: Some of us are not familiar with the Spanish language, like many other middle school children. Since I plan to teach some day Spanish, I would like to show you a useful resource that I was able to find that can assist and be useful to any Spanish teacher out there. Not only can this assist Spanish teachers in general but it can also help any person who wants to learn the basics of the Spanish language.

2007.07.31 08:21:20 JosephAW: Bits and pieces

2007.07.31 08:21:27 SandraFl: WoW!  your spanish is great!  you really caught my attention!

2007.07.31 08:21:37 DanikaB nods and looks forward to getting help with basics

2007.07.31 08:21:52 JasmineR: The original website that I had posted under the discussion board was not working but Dr. Brown has posted a comment that has corrected the error that I had. So, you all can go ahead and start viewing the website.

2007.07.31 08:22:13 JasmineR: For those of you who would like to just type it out here is the website, it isn’t long: http://www.spanishprograms.com/spanish_teacher/

2007.07.31 08:22:13 SandraFl: which site is it?

2007.07.31 08:22:19 SandraFl: ok

2007.07.31 08:22:54 JasmineR: has everyone logged on

2007.07.31 08:22:59 JasmineR: to the site

2007.07.31 08:23:01 JasmineR: ?

2007.07.31 08:23:03 SylviaMe: yes

2007.07.31 08:23:07 JasmineR: ok

2007.07.31 08:23:08 ChristineQ: si

2007.07.31 08:23:14 RicardoT: yes

2007.07.31 08:23:16 DanikaB: i did... but, now i have a woman giving me a lesson

2007.07.31 08:23:23 JasmineR: good job christine, she is already practicing her spanish

2007.07.31 08:23:25 SandraFl: got it!

2007.07.31 08:23:38 JasmineR: Now that everyone has been able to get on the site please click where it says: “click here to enter” under were it says Tour the free Lessons. It is a box that in it says, “Welcome to the visual link” D.L.C. The visual link will then open up on a separate window.

2007.07.31 08:23:39 JasmineR: Once it opens up click on the right hand low corner where it says “Skip intro.”

2007.07.31 08:23:53 JasmineR: First, lets all click on where it says “Family” on the left side of the Visual Link under Vocabulary categories. There you will see that there is a card match, flash cards, a quiz, a vocabulary builder, crossword puzzle, a burrito builder (which is a game), a word search puzzle, and finally the vocabulary list with the terms.

2007.07.31 08:24:00 LoriOl: it takes me to the website but it says file not found

2007.07.31 08:24:16 DanikaB: lori, go up to the url window and delete the >

2007.07.31 08:24:28 DanikaB: or the %3 or whatever is there.

2007.07.31 08:24:34 DanikaB: or click on the link i posted as a reply

2007.07.31 08:24:35 RicardoT: burrito builder..awesome

2007.07.31 08:24:59 JasmineR: ok guys

2007.07.31 08:25:00 LoriOl: ok got it

2007.07.31 08:25:05 JasmineR: how are we doing with the website?

2007.07.31 08:25:19 JoanieP left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:25:28 SandraFl: mine hasn't opened

2007.07.31 08:25:36 JasmineR: it takes a while

2007.07.31 08:25:46 SandraFl: yeah, its loading

2007.07.31 08:25:52 JasmineR: ok, good Sandra

2007.07.31 08:26:06 DanikaB: is this a free site, or do you have to pay for lessons?

2007.07.31 08:26:07 JasmineR: let me tell you why i loved this resource

2007.07.31 08:26:13 DanikaB listens

2007.07.31 08:26:52 JasmineR: well, other than the spanish vocabulary the other lesson below it, you will have to pay for them

2007.07.31 08:27:03 JasmineR: although they do give you an example of each lesson

2007.07.31 08:27:20 MariaBa: wow those are great lessons for beginning spanish speakers

2007.07.31 08:27:32 JasmineR: The reason I loved this resource was because it is a fun way for children to learn the Spanish language by practicing it through game playing in order to test their knowledge. Other than standing in front of the classroom and boring the kids out of their minds with vocabulary terms and putting them to write the term down five times in a paper so they can memorize them and learn them, having them do these types of activities helps them learn Spanish easily.

2007.07.31 08:28:09 JasmineR: Another thing is that they can access this website and visual link at home so that they can practice the Spanish terms by playing the games or doing the cross word puzzle or even quizzing themselves. Not only that, but this is a way to also incorporate the use of technology in the classroom. While they are learning a foreign language, they are also learning how to navigate through the internet and getting hold of a useful site.

2007.07.31 08:28:19 MirandaR left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:28:20 AidaM: I would like to learn another language other than English and Spanish

2007.07.31 08:28:40 DanikaB: now that i clicked on the right thing, the free stuff... yeah, wow is this a slick resource.

2007.07.31 08:28:46 SylviaMe: I really like this site

2007.07.31 08:28:54 AmeliaIG joined the room.

2007.07.31 08:28:56 DanikaB: for those of you on slow connections, once it loaded does it work quickly or slow?

2007.07.31 08:29:06 RicardoT: works quick

2007.07.31 08:29:17 JasmineR: yes

2007.07.31 08:29:29 JessicaG: WOW, very interesting site, i'm going to save it on my USB so I can use it when I start teaching a spanish class.

2007.07.31 08:29:35 DanikaB really likes the connection Jasmine made about technological literacy as part of the content and context for learning the material

2007.07.31 08:30:06 JasmineR: another thing that we have to consider with middle school kids

2007.07.31 08:30:16 JasmineR: is the fact that they love video games

2007.07.31 08:30:18 SandraFl: Jasmine, now that I've gotten to the site where do i go?  I can see on the left the vocab

2007.07.31 08:30:28 JasmineR: so, while they learn they can also play games

2007.07.31 08:30:32 JasmineR: like the burrito game

2007.07.31 08:30:38 JasmineR: have you guys tried it out?

2007.07.31 08:30:46 JessicaG: Yes, its cool...

2007.07.31 08:30:55 NikkiC: my presentation is about games actually...

2007.07.31 08:30:55 JasmineR: go to wherever you would like to go

2007.07.31 08:30:58 JasmineR: check it out

2007.07.31 08:30:59 MirandaR joined the room.

2007.07.31 08:31:16 JasmineR: it also provides a quiz

2007.07.31 08:31:24 JasmineR: and it even corrects the quiz

2007.07.31 08:31:32 JasmineR: i would use this resource

2007.07.31 08:31:44 JasmineR: and take the kids to the computer lab

2007.07.31 08:31:49 JasmineR: have them take the quiz

2007.07.31 08:31:51 DanikaB hasn't quite figured out how to play the burrito builder

2007.07.31 08:31:54 JasmineR: and record their grades

2007.07.31 08:32:20 JasmineR: this is an easier way for me to quiz them rather than taking a stack of papers home and correcting them by hand

2007.07.31 08:32:30 JasmineR: in the burrito builder

2007.07.31 08:32:39 DanikaB: i read the instructions!

2007.07.31 08:32:47 JasmineR: you have to type the translation for the english words that are appearing

2007.07.31 08:32:57 DanikaB likes the not having to take home quizzes to grade

2007.07.31 08:33:08 AnaR: this reminds me of the read 180 program for esl studetns

2007.07.31 08:33:08 JasmineR: and if it is correct you accumalate points

2007.07.31 08:33:24 DanikaB loves the concept for the burrito builder

2007.07.31 08:33:29 JasmineR: i've never used that program

2007.07.31 08:33:30 NoraEG: I like the word puzzle

2007.07.31 08:33:39 RicardoT: awesome

2007.07.31 08:33:40 DanikaB thinks this connects back to Jose's presentation a bit, on using gaming to teach

2007.07.31 08:33:40 JasmineR: it also includes flash cards

2007.07.31 08:33:42 SandraFl: this is cool, i finally got into the burrito builder

2007.07.31 08:34:01 JasmineR: if you all have your sound system on you can hear the way they are pronouncing each term

2007.07.31 08:34:21 DanikaB: and the ginchy music for burrito building

2007.07.31 08:34:23 AnaR: can sudents record

2007.07.31 08:34:29 DanikaB wonders if everyone has earphones

2007.07.31 08:34:29 JasmineR: lol yes

2007.07.31 08:34:32 AnaR: great

2007.07.31 08:34:58 GregMar gots small speakers

2007.07.31 08:35:04 DanikaB: this is a terrific resource for learning spanish. very high tech and polished but still easy to navigate

2007.07.31 08:35:05 AnaR frowns

2007.07.31 08:35:07 JasmineR: well guys, let me stop here so our next presenter can start

2007.07.31 08:35:17 AissaT left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:35:48 RicardoT: Gold Stars!

2007.07.31 08:35:53 JasmineR: and for you all parents whose children really cant understand spanish, this can help your children out

2007.07.31 08:35:53 NoraEG: nicely done

2007.07.31 08:36:03 DanikaB: Next we'll turn our attention to Nikki..... if you are ready

2007.07.31 08:36:05 NikkiC: I got my idea from Dr. McWilliams, who is teaching a class in the Fall for philosophy on virtual worlds and utopias from this game called second life...

2007.07.31 08:36:06 SandraFl: no earphones...id love to listen to this i'll have to come back to it later but this is really nice for people who are not proficcient in spanish

2007.07.31 08:36:39 NikkiC: Which is like...well...this little "world" you can log onto with pretty much everything--

2007.07.31 08:37:00 NikkiC: yes...t.here's a little video on youtube about it, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TMGR9q43dag

2007.07.31 08:37:11 AnaR: its all about technology now a days

2007.07.31 08:37:24 VanessaT joined the room.

2007.07.31 08:37:33 AissaT joined the room.

2007.07.31 08:37:43 NikkiC: it can be used as a resource for almost any subject

2007.07.31 08:38:01 NikkiC: but the only problem is, for an educator to make their own classroom or island it costs about a thousand dollars!

2007.07.31 08:38:16 JosephAW: ouch

2007.07.31 08:38:24 DanikaB . o O ( that's a pretty big problem! )

2007.07.31 08:39:06 AidaM left for a few seconds

2007.07.31 08:39:23 DanikaB: I am teaching a "Writing and Culture" course next semester... you guys have convinced me that I need to do a unit on videogaming and learning

2007.07.31 08:39:32 AndreaZ joined the room.

2007.07.31 08:39:50 VanessaT left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:39:56 AissaT left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:40:08 JosephAW: Of Course

2007.07.31 08:40:12 RicardoT: damn that was an old game

2007.07.31 08:40:20 DanikaB frowns... doesn't remember it

2007.07.31 08:40:21 RicardoT: it was fun though

2007.07.31 08:40:28 LoriOl: oregon trail was awesome...but i sucked at it

2007.07.31 08:40:30 GregMar: i remember amazon trail

2007.07.31 08:40:40 LoriOl: amazon trail???

2007.07.31 08:40:44 RicardoT: there was an amazon trail?!

2007.07.31 08:40:51 LoriOl: never heard of it

2007.07.31 08:40:56 NikkiC: !! there were a bunch of different versions for it, a long time ago in school they had this one with these huge floppy disks, but then they upgraded and you actually got to learn stuff

2007.07.31 08:40:56 GregMar: in weslaco we had it

2007.07.31 08:41:05 RuthM joined the room.

2007.07.31 08:41:28 DanikaB: ah, i think i had already graduated high school before it was commonly used in classrooms

2007.07.31 08:41:31 LoriOl: is that like the heb brand of oregon trail?

2007.07.31 08:41:34 DanikaB sighs at her old self

2007.07.31 08:41:37 JosephAW: We even had it in Monte Alto!

2007.07.31 08:41:39 NoraEG left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:42:08 RicardoT: your not old Danika

2007.07.31 08:42:10 JosephAW: That was back in the mid-eighties

2007.07.31 08:42:12 NikkiC: but um...Second life can be like that too, and if you're doing a particular theme as a class the school would pay for it--or your university can just have a general campus with "regular" classrooms

2007.07.31 08:42:40 GregMar: oh funny, nah you took pictures of different animals in the jungles and speared fish along the amazon river

2007.07.31 08:42:52 AidaM came back

2007.07.31 08:42:52 DanikaB: Nikki, is it like a more "real" environment than say here at tapped in? I've never looked at it.

2007.07.31 08:43:09 NikkiC: mmm...well, yes and no

2007.07.31 08:43:18 JoseJC: is it so real that you can plug into it D:

2007.07.31 08:43:20 NikkiC: it's kind of like virtual reality?  but...

2007.07.31 08:43:21 JoseJC: like THE MATRIX

2007.07.31 08:43:25 NikkiC: there can be like little aliens walking around

2007.07.31 08:43:25 NikkiC: haha

2007.07.31 08:43:26 JoseJC: ????

2007.07.31 08:43:37 JoseJC: oh hey I've heard of second life

2007.07.31 08:43:41 NikkiC: or something like that...

2007.07.31 08:43:42 JoseJC: it's some MMO

2007.07.31 08:43:43 DanikaB: wow, i see there are over 8.5 million residents.

2007.07.31 08:43:46 NikkiC: you can download it for free

2007.07.31 08:44:13 DanikaB: I am really intrigued by the growing popularity of "second" and "virtual" lives.

2007.07.31 08:44:16 NikkiC: Dr. McWilliams is teaching a class with it, and the kids will be meeting on it and stuff

2007.07.31 08:44:20 GregMar left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:44:22 JoAnnaG joined the room.

2007.07.31 08:44:23 DanikaB has all she can handle trying to live the first life

2007.07.31 08:44:30 NikkiC: haha

2007.07.31 08:44:31 ElizabetCh left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:44:53 AndreaZ left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:44:58 DanikaB: so you can download it for free, but can you "live" there for free, or do you have to pay something. i see you have to virtually buy things there.

2007.07.31 08:45:03 RuthM left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:45:06 NikkiC: it's really interesting how it was made to be an ideal world and such...and then it became pretty much a business

2007.07.31 08:45:14 NikkiC: you can live there for free

2007.07.31 08:45:27 NikkiC: but you have to pay for property and "clothes"

2007.07.31 08:45:33 DanikaB nods

2007.07.31 08:45:44 DanikaB: so, capitalism was reproduced on this utopia

2007.07.31 08:45:47 NikkiC: ther have been people making small fortunes with their own "boutiques" of odd clothing that people buy to stand out

2007.07.31 08:45:48 NikkiC: yeah

2007.07.31 08:46:26 DanikaB: that's totally fascinating. i can see how Dr. McWilliams' course will be totally interesting.

2007.07.31 08:46:26 NikkiC: it's a good resource for economics students too because of htat

2007.07.31 08:46:38 ChristineQ: are you a resident or member of Second Life Nikki?

2007.07.31 08:46:38 DanikaB: you could spend a whole semester analyzing this environment alone

2007.07.31 08:46:49 NikkiC: mmm...I downloaded it, but I never messed around on it

2007.07.31 08:46:55 NikkiC: my computer is too slow ;(

2007.07.31 08:47:00 AnaR left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:47:04 AnaR joined the room.

2007.07.31 08:47:16 ChristineQ: It sounds really interesting

2007.07.31 08:47:17 DanikaB: and it seems like now we need technological literacy not just to learn, but if we desire to have a second identity

2007.07.31 08:47:30 JoseJC: yeah I heard of Second Life, I was reading about it when I started reading on WoW

2007.07.31 08:47:45 JoseJC: and the money you make there can be traded in for real money

2007.07.31 08:47:57 JoseJC: and vise-versa right

2007.07.31 08:48:00 NikkiC: yes

2007.07.31 08:48:07 LizaR: ya

2007.07.31 08:48:19 ChristineQ: cool

2007.07.31 08:48:26 ChristineQ: become a virtual millionare

2007.07.31 08:48:35 RicardoT: i want money

2007.07.31 08:48:47 DanikaB . o O ( no ideology going on here )

2007.07.31 08:48:48 DanikaB smiles

2007.07.31 08:48:53 JoseJC: NOOOOOOO

2007.07.31 08:48:57 RicardoT: so i can pay for virtual school

2007.07.31 08:49:02 JoseJC feels heartbroken

2007.07.31 08:49:14 ChristineQ: of course

2007.07.31 08:49:22 JoseJC: danika your writing and culture class is at the same time as writing for publication :'(((

2007.07.31 08:49:24 DanikaB: nikki, I think you've pointed out a resource that we all probably are going to have to take into consideration as the future of teaching unfolds.

2007.07.31 08:49:34 NikkiC: hmm, yeah, some universities are using it because they feel the universities are getting too crowded

2007.07.31 08:49:52 DanikaB: i know Jose, the person who used to do the scheduling didn't put a lot of thought into things like conflict

2007.07.31 08:49:59 JoseJC: </333

2007.07.31 08:50:00 DanikaB nods

2007.07.31 08:50:03 JosephAW: this is fascinating.  I never knew of this.

2007.07.31 08:50:14 JoseJC: you have to be careful though

2007.07.31 08:50:18 JoseJC: and I speak from experience

2007.07.31 08:50:18 NikkiC: why?

2007.07.31 08:50:26 JoseJC: so listen to my words of wisdom

2007.07.31 08:50:32 JoseJC: when you play something like an MMO

2007.07.31 08:50:33 DanikaB: yes, this whole second identity and virtual interaction at one point seemed like a lot of hype, but it clearly is steadily becoming more and more common.

2007.07.31 08:50:38 JoseJC: it's really easy to become sucked in

2007.07.31 08:50:39 AidaM smiles

2007.07.31 08:50:49 ChristineQ left the room (signed off).

2007.07.31 08:50:50 DanikaB: i saw in the monitor yesterday an article about myspace after death
