Job Packet

For this course, we are designing our own virtual working environment, utilizing professional communication in order construct that "professional" environment. The first thing we need to do is set up the human element of the workplace. (In most professional areas, this is called "human resources"; I will ask you to think about the implications of that term.)

Much of the current job market, especially in highly innovative areas, depend more and more on individuals being able to "pitch" jobs to organizations and creating their own job descriptions according to their skills. Even in more traditional job searches, you must analyze your own skills and experience and have a sense of a "job description" that will fit for you. Given that, your first assignment is to create a job packet with an associated job description for the class workplace organization.

Your job packet will include:

The skills inventory does not need to be in any special format, but should be as complete and extensive as possible. You will want to account for all your skills, even if they do not make it into the resume. Be creative; think about how you can describe all the things you do in terms of experience and skills that you can draw on in professional situations. Do not be afraid to get a little goofy and stretch a bit in the inventory. You can pick and choose and hone the way you represent yourself in the final drafts of the resume and cover letter.

Develop a resume that covers your skills and presents you in the most appropriate way for the job. You want to create a resume that you will be able to adapt and use for other purposes (like getting a job you actually get paid for, perhaps). However, you might take this opportunity to be creative and think about how to make a resume that is creative and personally reflective of you. Use the online resources and the readings to help develop these materials.

Draft of the resume and your skills inventory is due Monday, August 30th. You will be revising the whole packet through week 4 of the course, at which time you will need to have an "A" packet that has gotten you hired into the course organization. If you aren't hired, it will be difficult for you to continue with the course projects!
