English 101
Midterm
The purpose of this midterm is to demonstrate to
me that you can apply the skills of rhetorical analysis of a text. You
must have a text to analyze. As we discussed in class:
- You have the entire hour to write (I recommend you
use the entire time and revise when you can).
- Analyze your text in terms of rhetorical features. Keep
in mind, you need to identify the purpose,
audience, context,
and message of the text. You need to decide what strategies
the text employees to achieve purpose and reach an audience.
- You must have an overriding claim. Do not just
analyze the text in general, but attempt to tie your analysis to some claim
about the text. An example claim might be: "The advertisement for
Adobe products uses multiple appeals which play on teachers’ values in
order to encourage them to purchase the products." In this claim you
must show how the appeals directly appeal to teachers; you should not just
discuss the appeals in general.
- You may use this sheet of paper and/or any additional
sheets necessary. Please put your name on all pages.
- Title your analysis.
Your midterm is worth 100 points (10%) of your grade.
See summaries of class discussions on rhetorical
analysis and on the midterm.
