Journal Prompts

Journal #1 (July 12)

Think about a significant time when you learned to read and/or write (a "literacy moment"). Who helped you or inspired you in that situation? What did that person do to impact your learning (whether for good or bad)? Write a journal entry about that situation, describing what you learned, what was significant about it, and what it was about how the person taught you that impacted your learning.

Journal #2 (July 13)

In order to come to an understanding of why we teach what we teach and how, we need to actively engage what our values and beliefs are (we'll discuss this throughout the semester as "ideology"). For this journal, please take some time to reflect on what are your values. Some questions you might consider to get you going include: What is your "theory of life"? What values are most important to you? How do you think the world should be? What things in the world would you change if you could?

Journal 3 (July 18)
After this week's readings and class discussions, have you come to a different understanding of "pedagogy"? What, in some detail, do you think pedagogy entails? (Draw on readings, discussions, and your own examples to explain.)

Journal 4 (Aug 1)

As we are reading and discussing approaches to tutoring, you will have a series of activities/journals designed to emphasize the concepts we are learning.

You will be pairing up with someone in the class and creating a "tutor" relationship where each of you will be tutoring each other for this series of Journals.

To prepare for that, please think about what you need to find out and be aware of as you begin a tutoring relationship.

Then, design a brief writing activity for your new tutoring partner. You will want to create a prompt or activity that will give you a piece of writing that you can use to assess your partner's writing style, strengths, and weaknesses. You will be giving this "assignment" to your partner to complete and bring to class tomorrow.

You also will be completing the assignment your partner designs for you (that will count as journal 5). We will continue to work with this activity in class on Thursday.

Please Note:

There were 8 formal journals (5 and 6 came out of journal 4). The 8th journal was given in class and asked you to discuss a couple learning moments where you were "taught" something without doing it (and then when you tried to do it, found you hadn't learned it) and a time when you were taught something through experience (that is, learned by doing it).
