English 101

Announcements

December 8, 1997

Wow! the semester comes to an end.  You are done with everything now, except, of course that dang final!

Review my ADVICE for the final, if you like.

The final for this course is scheduled for:

December 12, 1997 8:00am-10:00am in Soc Sci 206.

There are no make-ups (except in VERY VERY extreme cases--flat tires, oversleeping, hangovers, sniffles do not count!). You will only have 2 hours to write the exam, so don't be late.

For information about the final exam itself, the study guide and reading packet will be available around November 21st. You must go to the bookstore and purchase the final exam packet at the "ClassNotes" counter downstairs.

To help you prepare for the exam, a panel discussion on "the uses of liberal education" will take place on Wednesday, December 3, 5-6:30 in the Social Sciences Auditorium. Panelists are Barbara Babcock, Regents Professor of English and Anthropology; Michael Gottfredson, Vice President for Undergraduate Education and sponsor of the new Core Curricululm; Jerry Hogle, University Professor of English and Chair of the Faculty; and Jon Solomon, Professor in the Classics Department and author of *Up the University.*

You will be preparing for the exam in class with the use of group presentations. I recommend outside study groups to discuss the essays and the study guide questions as well.

October 1
The site has been updated with Unit 2 schedule, assignments, and readings.

You want to check out the news on Writing Strategies and your own definition of terms.

Starting October 1, I will request a student from each class to submit a summary of the concepts we went over in class. Please consider volunteering next class!

New addition to the site: Tucson Resources

Well, we've decided not to use the listserv as we first planned to.  If you have not subscribed to the listserv, you still need to do that. Mostly, you can expect announcements, changes, suggestions, and other friendly words of advice from me over the listserv (you can go check out the "revised" listserv description page here).

Instead of listserv, we will be using "Caucus." Please read the description and directions (which is where that last link will lead you) before you sign up.  If you already know all about it, you can go directly to http://caucus.arizona.edu and log right in!

Tips

Tip o' the day:

Use your journal to write down possible ideas, things you are concerned about, questions about the course, brainstorms which hit you while your friend is chattering away about the gorgeous person he met last night... Don't think of your journal as a "task," think of it as your opportunity to get the essay done painlessly! (just make sure you do the at least the required assignments).

Get involved in the community to make your time here exciting and rewarding.  Most college students find the first year very difficult because they do not feel a sense of belonging.  Volunteering is an excellent way to use your time, gain new perspectives on issues impacting ALL communities, and to feel like you belong.  Check out the community resources.

Never ever drink and drive.

Check out the writing center.

Be wise as you make choices in your life.  Pursue your interests avidly and choose to do things you like. If you focus on making money or gaining prestige, you will never know when you are happy.
